Capulin Volcano National Monument contains a cinder cone that was formed only approximately 60,000 years ago. This unique formation is surrounded by miles of flat lands, making the sight from the top truly impressive. A road winds all the way up to the rim of the volcano, but there is also a hiking trail that loops around the rim as well as shorter trails that highlight lava flows and other geological features. At the base of the volcano, the visitors center contains a variety of displays and exhibits that help illuminate the history of the volcano's formation and active life. Located in the northeastern portion of the state, not far from the Colorado border, the monument is a short drive from Dorsey Mansion State Park.
